The United States faces a multitude of issues, a major one being domestic violence. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 20 million people per minute are being physically abused by their partner. The voices of these victims are seldom heard. We are focused on bringing awareness and to eventually reform the way our society handles domestic abuse. We aim to bring forth the message that these victims are not alone.
In the past, we have done a project regarding underprivileged women and how they deal with the lack of availability of feminine hygienic products. A few steps we have done to raise awareness and change public judgement on menstruation: gave “period presentations” in classrooms, presented at a science symposium, held a feminine hygiene product drive with the American Red Cross of Long Beach, and sent over a hundred care packages full of feminine supplies to homeless women’s shelters in Los Angeles. We were able to create a change in this problem that people were unaware of. This year, we held a voter registration event to encourage today’s youth to vote and fix their future because we believe that it is essential to have everyone’s voice heard.
This year, the decision was to help make many people's voices heard that have experienced any form of domestic violence and provide sources to which people can speak out. With a collection of voices, one large shout can be heard across the world as we work to stop and minimize violence that is occurring all around us to the extent that it diminished! Victims of domestic abuse do not have to face their struggles by themselves. We strive to make domestic abuse to become a topic that will not be shied away.
