by Shua Cho Our CAMS Girls Build LA team held Scratch Workshops online to teach kids how to code, teach about marine plastic pollution, and teach proper safety precautions during COVID-19.
We were able to code and teach two Scratch games. We created helpful instructions for the learners and were able to help them have fun experiences coding. Additionally, the participants of our workshop were able to learn about plastic marine pollution facts and about COVID-19. One of our games is an I Spy game called Sea Search where you try to find plastic trash hidden in the ocean while learning facts about marine plastic pollution. The other game that we taught students how to code was a platformer game where the player would have to stay six feet away from other characters, wear a mask, and get hand sanitizer.

On October 24th, 2020, 92 female-identified students from our school were given the opportunity to attend the Hello Future Convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center. At the convention, there were several STEM-related workshops and many entrepreneurs, tech innovators, and brands to inspire and encourage students to look into possible future careers. Many of the workshops involved creating commuter programs, observing science experiments and chemical reactions, and understanding health safety techniques. One workshop was hosted from the LA Fire Department where students were able to learn CPR and different important life-saving tips, as well as the skills necessary to be a firefighter. Another workshop from BuroHappold Engineering, where students were able to learn about how engineers are able to use V/R technology to solve real world problems. The experience was very rewarding and allowed our students to talk one on one with innovators and scientists about their careers.
by Angelina Park Sadly all our planned events and projects for the year have been postponed or cancelled because of the pandemic… But that hasn’t stopped our team from continuing our work! This month, our team came up with the idea of addressing the topics of ocean pollution and COVID-19 safety through hosting virtual coding workshops! In these workshops we planned to teach elementary and middle school students how to use Scratch to make their own games while learning about how to stay safe from the virus and the impacts of ocean pollution. During these times, it’s difficult to contact the team and even reach out to our community. But through the use of Facebook and other means of social media, our group has successfully reached out to various members in our community to encourage participation in this educational opportunity. Sure we’re all home and apart from each other, but our team is doing our best to stay connected and make an impact! Hopefully all goes well~
by Crystal Ma Last Friday, on 4/26/2019, we began preparing packages full of necessities such as shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, and socks for domestic abuse help bags. We made over 200 care packages! Each care package consists of: - Shampoo -Shower gel -Socks -Soap -Toothpaste/ toothbrush -Tissues -Mouthwash -Deodorant We hope these care packages are helpful! by Julianne Lim For our meeting today, we split into groups in order to improve our website, as well as creating a presentation about our mission. We got a feedback email from Girls Build on how to improve our website, so we were sure to take the advice!
In addition, a small portion of us worked on fundraising flyers for donation drives that we were planning to host. It's overwhelming to see the heart behind donations made by classmates, so we are sure to make a poster that is creative, yet informative about our mission! Overall, we plan to spread awareness about domestic violence in every way we can: with posters, our presentation, and our website. by Shua Cho Our CAMS Girls Build LA team had a big afterschool retreat meeting on December 5th to plan out the rest of the year and think up some crazy big event ideas! It was a potluck as well, so we had plenty of fuel-um, I mean food, to keep us going as we brainstormed. During the retreat we got our budget, website, and event plans ready for the next GBLA deadline! It was an extremely productive meeting, especially since we had all the pizza we could want! Honestly, that giant bag of hot cheetos is what truly gave me to motivation to get this website organized in time. As we continued to research about domestic violence and practical methods that we could use to assist our community in this area, I was brought back to reality. More than any spicy snack, the real motivator for what we were doing was the 20 people every minute that gets physically abused by an intimate partner in the US (according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence). Once again, I was reminded how grateful I was-how grateful we were that we had this incredible opportunity given to us by the LA Promise Fund to implement positive change in our community and get to learn new things about teamwork, communication, and government along the way. Thank you so much for giving us, just a small group of teen girls, the means to do something unexpected and hugely impactful. |
