Our team’s project will reach beyond the scope of our school through communicating the project’s main message to a wide audience, as well as involving the audience in hands-on community service projects. Additionally, we will inform the public about food waste and healthy eating habits that would positively impact the current state of waste. The team plans to hold workshops in local middle and high schools where we could discuss the food waste issue, promote helpful actions, and teach students how to make their own composters. We hope to collaborate with our neighboring campus, California State University Dominguez Hills to promote reducing food waste and improving our environment. Their Campus Urban Farm is centered around sustainability and reducing the school’s environmental impact. We will also utilize social media to spike engagement in order to communicate our message to as wide an audience as possible. Social media is a platform of the modern day; it will be an invaluable tool for spreading our message. The service projects we’ve considered - holding food drives, emphasizing advocacy, and creating food packages from good-conditioned foods that were about to be disposed of- will serve as an avenue for individuals interested in helping to make an impact by providing their support. Finally, we can convey the urgency of this issue to legislatures by contacting representatives to push laws regulating food waste. Overall, we hope to tackle the ongoing issue of food waste by involving the wider public in the climate change effort, and reaching out to organizations to make a long-standing impact.
