We engaged with all three pillars of civic engagement: service, representation, and advocacy. We showed service to the community with the donation of 60% of our budget to the LA Regional Food Bank. Using Zoom and Scratch, we were able to represent our core mission - to reduce plastic waste in the ocean - in a virtual medium that people could still experience in the midst of social distancing.
We acted as advocates against marine waste through our game/teaching campaign and our social media page. In addition, we also participated in the COVID-19 Virtual Advocacy Program by implementing a COVID-19 game into our Zoom session that could teach children basic precautions to take to avoid contracting/spreading the virus.
Though circumstances limited our opportunities to interact with the public in person, CAMS GBLA was still able to demonstrate full civic engagement.
