As young, empowering women of the California Academy of Mathematics and Science, we are on a mission to reduce food waste, spread awareness, and help families with food insecurity. Food waste is a growing problem that stems from throwing away edible foods. According to Feeding America, 130 billion meals are thrown away every year. Concurrently, we’ve noticed an excess of food waste in our school’s trash cans. This excess food waste, often still packaged, in our trash cans ultimately ends up in landfills contributing to global warming and climate change. Our school’s food waste, along with the billions of pounds of food waste produced in America, contribute to our climate problem. Using this knowledge, we chose to center our project on reducing the amount of food being thrown away.
Our primary goal is to reduce and sort food waste, create food packages, create composting bins, and spread food waste awareness. We’ll also have various projects and outreach events. We also aim to encourage others to help us reach our objective by spreading awareness through having workshops about food waste products as well as social media posts. Throughout the project, we will strive to contact legislatures and support propositions via the internet or even through our local community in addition to protesting in local protest advocating for our chosen issue. As part of our mission, we want to promote healthy eating, reusing and recycling, and upcycling, in which women get together and make a change by decreasing food waste.
