Girls Build Summit
On September 28, 2018, nearly 10,000 young female students from high schools from around LA County gathered at USC's Galen Center (3400 S Figueroa St, Los Angeles, CA 90089) to the Girls Build Summit.
The LA Promise Fund partnered with Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote to talk about civic engagement. The main purpose was to spread awareness about voter registration in regards to the mid-term elections.
Shonda Rhimes, screenwriter, executive producer, and author known for her works on Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, was a guest speaker that inspired us to use our voice.
Other notable guests were Delaney Tarr and Kyrah Simon, both students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which is the site of the deadliest school shooting in history, which happened in early 2018. The two were engaged in a conversation with California Secretary of State Alex Padilla about activism among students.
Nearly eighty girls from CAMS attended the summit. Not all of the attendees are part of the club, but are interested in student activism and civic engagement.
This summit was so important because of its impact on young students such as the members of Girls Build. With added information on how to actively register or pre-register to vote, young adults can choose their voice and realize that their vote counts.
