As young, empowering women of the California Academy of Mathematics and Science, we are on a mission to better the health and wellness of our community and surroundings. Throughout our research, we found that plastics-shaped like hormones at the molecular level dissolve and enter the food chain. Furthermore, the endocrine system of various organisms (including humans), is disrupted by the accidental digestion of plastics, causing imbalances and detrimental effects in our oceans. 100,000 turtles and marine mammals, such as dolphins, hales, and seals, are killed by plastic marine litter every year around the world. Plastics are the most common man made objects sighted at sea, with 18,000 pieces of plastic litter floating on every square kilometer of the world's oceans! According to a study conducted by Orb Media on plastics and tap water, 83% of tested water samples from major metropolitan areas around the world were contaminated with plastic fibers. Using this knowledge, we chose to center our project on reducing/removing plastic pollution in the ocean.
